John Patrick (Pat) and Judith (Judy) Carol Overton celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Monday, November 23, 2020.

The couple’s sons and wives, Pat III and Lavon Overton of Weatherford, Brad and Chrytal Overton of Cordell, and Greg and Cindy Overton of Thomas shared a small family celebration on Thanksgiving with their parents.

Judy is the daughter and sixth child of Floyd and Mattie Lanier, now deceased, who were peanut and watermelon farmers residing and farming northeast of Weatherford (now the location of Stafford Field Airport, and multi housing additions).

Pat was originally from the Atlanta area in Georgia, his parents were John Patrick and Grace Overton, he had five siblings, graduated from Forest Park High School before joining the U.S. Air Force in August, 1959. Upon Pat’s completion of Aircraft and Missile Maintenance School in Rantoul, Illinois, he was sent to Burns Flat and Clinton-Sherman Air Force Base to work on the B-52 bombers. He arrived in a Greyhound bus in a heavy snow storm in January 1960. All of his classmates from Illinois were shipped to sunny California.

On a Friday evening, June 24, 1960, as young airmen do, Pat and an Air Force friend attended a local teenage, WKY “Sox Hop” in Clinton. He asked a young girl, Judy Lanier, to dance with him, they began talking and dancing, and that is where this love story began. Fate brought Pat to Oklahoma.

Pat came to Weatherford frequently on his time off, helped thresh peanuts, loved being on the farm, and he loved Judy’s mother’s cooking. She was raised in Alabama, and she knew about cornbread and grits.

The couple was married November 23, 1960, at the original First Baptist Church in Weatherford, with family and close friends sharing the time together. The newlyweds lived in the Clinton area for 3 years, as Pat finished his Air Force tour.

Pat has worked in and around aviation most of his working years until the Overtons became involved in real estate, once the Overton’s sons were nearly grown. After Clinton, the couple had lived in Oklahoma City, Atlanta and Yukon, and has been settled on an acreage on the original family farm in Weatherford for nearly 52 years. The Overton’s now have multiplied to 29 family members and only begun to grow.

The Overtons would love to receive emails and notes of any past experience, stories, happy or sad times together through the years. The Overtons do ask to not send gifts.
