Solar Oven S’mores

Materials:

• Cardboard box, pizza boxes work best

• Aluminum foil

• Plastic wrap or bag

• Black construction paper

• Tape

• Glue stick

• Pencil or wooden skewer

• Scissors of utility knife

• Chocolate, graham crackers, marshmallows

Instructions:

NOTE: Parental involvement will be needed during the cutting portion of this project.

Cut an “oven door” flap on the box, making it big enough to accommodate what you are cooking and how much access you need. If desired, the box can decorated with makers after this step.

Glue black construction paper to the bottom of the box. It is important to use black paper to absorb the heat. Glue aluminum foil to the inside of the door. This reflects the sun into the oven.

Tape the plastic across the opening of the doors to keep the heat inside the box. Put your s’mores inside the oven and place the box outside in the sun. Use a wooden skewer or pencil to prop the lid at an angle which reflects the sunlight into the oven. Use tape to secure the skewer in place.

The chocolate will melt quickly, so wait until the marshmallows puff from the heat. This project is best done on a hot, sunny day. Step-by-step picture instructions are available here: www.desertchica.com/diy-solar-oven-smores-kids-science-experiment.
