The CARES Act was discussed Tuesday at the Weatherford Area Economic Development Foundation meeting.

After the meeting Mayor Mike Brown, Fire Chief Mike Karlin, and Police Chief Louis Flowers explained, the CARES Act is a reimbursement to the city.

“This (salary money) is money we’ve already paid going back into the city budget,” Mayor Mike Brown said.

The money the City of Weatherford received will be used for the overtime and salaries for public safety services, which the city has already paid.

As of July, sales tax collections were down by 12.30 percent. With sales tax being low, it became more difficult for the city to pay the public safety services, according to the mayor.

“It’s a huge benefit for us, and gets us back to where we need to be,” Mayor Brown said about the benefits of the CARES Act. In all, the city is down about $600,000-$700,000 and the CARES Act will be worth up to $1 million to supplement losses.
