Economic director gives quick update during WAEDF meeting

Weatherford Economic Director Yolanda Creswell gave a quick update during the Weatherford Area Economic Development Foundation meeting Wednesday morning.

Weatherford sales tax has had a downward trend in sales tax for most of 2020, but Creswell said she believes numbers will take an upward turn with the new businesses coming in.

• Exit 82 Phase III: Creswell said the work is coming along nicely despite recent weather delaying construction.

• City Pool: Creswell said the city is working on a grant to match the funds from the sales tax which will be used to make improvements in the city pool.

• Industrial Park: Weatherford will receive $3.6 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to develop the city’s industrial park.

In addition to these ongoing and upcoming projects, Weatherford will have about $30 million in road construction done in the coming years. This includes major work on Airport Road and rebuilding the bridge at Exit 84. Creswell said the new bridge will be space themed, which she hopes will draw traffic toward the Stafford Air and Space Museum.

Steve Callen also gave a quick update on Weatherford Public Schools during the meeting. He said as of right now, the plan is to continue in-person classes after Thanksgiving Break, which is next week. However, the district has an A-B schedule and distance learning plan in place if the COVID-19 situation changes.
