An Elk City man has been charged with firstdegree murder — child abuse.

Troy Justice Jones, 24, allegedly was responsible for the death of his girlfriend’s 2-year old child.

The Elk City Police Department responded to a call in response to a child located at Great Plains Regional Hospital. Doctors from the hospital informed police the injuries the child sustained had not matched what Jones told doctors.

Police decided to question Jones with body cam footage in order to get his side of the story. Jones explained to police the victim was standing on the sink in the bathroom. Jones said the victim fell on his back and became limp. Jones said soon after the child’s mother walked in and saw the boy lying on the floor. 911 was called immediately and the mother who was trained to do so tried to administer CPR.

Court records indicate the mother was not home at the time of the alleged incident. When she got home the child’s mother described hearing gurgling and ran to the bathroom where the child was.

After the interview with Jones, police contacted a social worker from the University of Oklahoma Children’s Hospital, where the child was taken after initially being treated at the hospital in Elk City.

“The injuries she observed were in her professional opinion caused by abuse. The doctor said she had seen children fall from two story buildings that did not have injuries this severe,” the affidavit reads.

A court date has not been filed for Jones as of press time Monday.
