The Third Leadership Weatherford Class kicks off with a retreat at Roman Nose State Park. The Weatherford Area Chamber of Commerce sponsored group received training on economic development adn leaderhsip skills. Class members were Tracy Adams, Kathy Blakly, Paula Walker, Sheila Cohlmia, Donna Dirickson, Randy Switzer, Melissa Roe, Susan Steiner, Byron Cox, Scott Page and Clay Gilliland. Chamber Executive Director Linda Wckel and Chamber Business Development Committe Chairman John Hays accompanied the group. 2000

• Tonya West of Weatherford won the Swine Breeder’s Award plaque at the Custer County Free Fair. Weatherford FFA members shared top honors with Arapaho FFA members in the beef show’s heifer division.

• Local leaders and families began raising money for the bicycle and skate park at Radar Park.

• The Southwest Playhouse in Clinton prepared to open its 2000-01 season with “Forever Plaid” starring Terry Brooks, Mark Clements, Mark Lantz and Rolan Decker starring as the ill-fated members of the Plaids.

• Gen. Thomas Stafford returned to Weatherford as a guest speaker for the Custer County Historical Society.

• The Oklahoma Nursing Student Association announced it would host its annual Race for the Cause in Weatherford later that month. Part of the proceeds from the race would benefit the Agape Health Clinic.

40 Years Ago

1980

• Local National Guard members hosted a training session in downtown Weatherford near the Weatherford Daily News office. Guardsmen familiarized themselves with equipment provided by the Weatherford Fire Department.

• A pair of junior “cruiser” show skates sold for $17.96 at TG&Y Family Center.

• Southwestern Oklahoma State University hosted tryout for its collegiate rifle team. Previously, the university only allowed Army ROTC cadets to join the team, but it decided to open to all students who could shoot.

• A 1-pound bar of margarine sold for 39 cents at Safeway.

• SWOSU graduates and Weatherford natives Paul Nail and Doug Brown returned to the university. Nail taught in the Psychology Department while Brown was named the first ever career information officer.

60 Years Ago

1960

• Weatherford experienced a $200 increase in sale tax, bringing in $11,447.13, while Custer County saw a $5,000 drop in sales tax revenue. Clinton was down about $3,000, bringing in about $27,000.

• A 12-ounce can of Minutes Made brand orange juice sold for 39 cents at Willard’s Red Bud Food Center.

• A burglar broke into the Potter Hardware Store and stole a single case of 12-gauge shotgun shells. The thief was able to enter by breaking the locks on the front door with a pry bar. Nothing else was stolen.

• A 127-piece dinner set sold for $49.95 at Kelley Jewelers.

• The Weatherford and Carnegie golf clubs met at the Weatherford golf course for their third inter-club golf match. Carnegie won both matches on their home course while Weatherford won the previous match in Weatherford.
