Gavan Byrd, 2020-21 president of the Weatherford Kiwanis Club, took the helm from former president Haley Kliewer Tuesday and is looking at reviving a club which has seen a drop in activity since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Byrd, a local insurance agent, was born and raised on a farm in Lookeba and moved to Weatherford in 2011 with his wife Melody.

A long-time member of the club, Byrd wants to see an increase in attendance and ways to serve local kids during the pandemic.

After taking to the podium to introduce himself, Byrd opened the floor to any ideas from the other members.

One idea to come out of the talk was hosting a virtual BUGS program for kids. While it would take some negotiating with the schools, many members reacted favorably to the idea.

Another idea was to host a community event focused around families and children such as a fishing tournament at the Ole Fishing Hole.

One member suggested sending cards or otherwise reaching out to members who have missed several meetings. It also was suggested to begin livestreaming meetings again.

More options will be discussed at this month’s board meeting.
