The Hydro-Eakly Lady Bobcats softball team has lots of athletes on the field and has a new coach.

“I hope we get to have a softball season,” coach Hannah Guthrie said. “We will have a chance to be pretty good. But being consistent is key.”

Guthrie is entering her first season at Hydro-Eakly. She graduated high school from Vici and coached at Woodward for a year, coached at Mooreland for 4 years and last coached at Waynoka a year before coming to Hydro-Eakly. She coached basketball and just started coaching softball recently and this is her first coaching job for softball.

“I really like Hydro,” Guthrie said. “The kids are good athletes and even better kids. I am excited for this year.”

Guthrie said practice has been going really well, but it has rained a lot recently.

“I think I brought rain with me to Hydro,” Guthrie said. “It has rained a lot, but when the fields are not wet and it is not raining, we have gotten some really good work in. The biggest deal for us is me figuring out which girls work best in their positions.”

Senior shortstop Macey Buss said she wants this season to be fun for everyone, especially the seniors since it is their last season.

“I have learned to have fun while playing softball,” Buss said. “I am not taking anything for granted since it is my last season.”

Guthrie said it is crucial for everyone on the team to stay healthy and not get sick during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are really versatile as to who can play where,” Guthrie said. “If we have too many players who happen to get sick or are unable to play, we will be in trouble. We do not have a lot of players, so hopefully we can stay healthy and not get sick.”

Senior first baseman Casady Sublett said the team can be really good and they have seen recent success as most of the players were on the state basketball championship team last season.

We have a chance to be really good, but it is up to us to work hard and make it happen,” Sublett said. “We have the athletes and talent to accomplish great things. We are coming off of winning a state basketball championship, so we should do really well this season.”

Hydro begins its season, 4:30 p.m. Monday at home against Carnegie. The time listed is when the junior high plays and the varsity plays after the junior high game ends.
