The Weatherford Public Schools Board of Education declared an emergency situation during an emergency meeting Thursday afternoon regarding water damage from recent winter storm.

This allows the district to waive the requirements of the Oklahoma Competitive Bidding Act and begin working to fix the damage caused by frozen pipes bursting.

Interim Superintendent Steven Callen said work needs to be done in three locations: Burcham Elementary, Weatherford Middle School and the Performing Arts Center.

Burcham mainly experienced some carpe damage which can easily be fixed. The middle school gymnasium floor has some areas which are buckling and also need to be addressed.

However, the PAC received extensive damage to carpet in the hallways and underneath the stage, which may need to be gutted before repair work can begin.

Due to this incident, the Weatherford High School winter play, which was set to open this week, has been pushed back to the first week of April.

The board also instructed Callen to begin working with the insurance company and contractors to repair the damage.

Until the damage is repaired, the PAC will be unavailable for use.
