2000
• Southwestern Oklahoma State University began raising the $200,000 needed to build the Alumni Centennial Plaza. Plans for the plaza included a foursided clock tower to celebrate the university’s 100th anniversary.
• SWOSU junior Lacey Dale Cully was named Miss Rodeo Oklahoma for 2001.
• Improper disposal of fireplace ashes led to a dumpster fire along Hiler Street. The fire caused about $300 worth of damage, completely destroying the dumpster lids. However, the dumpster kept the fire from being worse.
• Weatherford students participated in the “Great American Smokeout” to discourage smoking.
• The SWOSU theatre department opened its production of “All in the Time,” a series of one-act plays written by David Ives. One-acts featured in the production include “Words, Words, Words” and “English Made Simple.”

1980
• Two accidents occurred 24 hours apart — about 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday — at the corner of Custer Street and Main Street. Both accidents were without injury, but the second accident caused about $6,000 worth of damage.
• The Weatherford photography club hosted a photography contest at SWOSU. • Quadrant 2 hosted the first meeting for Weatherford’s Neighborhood Watch Program. This quadrant covered everything east of Caddo Street and south of Huber Street. Marvin Easley was appointed quadrant chair.
• The Vesta Theatre was showing “Brubaker” starring Robert Redford.
• The Puff-Less Dragon, mascot for the Great American Smokeout, visited local schools as part of the program. The 24-hour event by the American Cancer Society aimed to get the nation’s smokers to finally kick the habit.
60 Years Ago
1960
• The Weatherford Eagles beat the Kingfisher Yellowjackets 22-12 in the last football game of the regular season. The winning game placed Weatherford in third place while Cordell led the district going into the playoffs.
• Mortan brand frozen pumpkin pies sold for 33 cents each at Eaton’s Foodliner.
• A car accident at Eighth and Huber streets left one person injured and caused $1,050 worth of damage, which is equal to about $9,200 in today’s money. The injured party received no serious injuries, just cuts and bruises.
• Turkey sold for 39 cents per pound at Willard’s Red Bud Food Center.
• The Custer County Health Department administered more than 3,600 free diphtheria inoculations to local residents after several cases had been identified in the county, which left two young children dead.
