Two SWOSU fall athletes tested positive for COVID-19, SWOSU Vice President of Public Affairs and Marketing Brian Adler confirmed Wednesday.

“Fall sport athletes are coming back and are being tested,” Adler said. “Two out of the 55 players tested positive and the players who tested positive are not living on campus and are quarantining.”

Numbers reported by the Oklahoma State Department of Health reported four active cases in Weatherford and 15 in Custer County. The other five active cases are in Clinton and Thomas. Clinton has four active cases and Thomas has an active case.

Adler also said football practice has not started yet and the two players who have COVID-19 are being quarantined, since practice has not begun yet. The two players have not been in contact with any other football players.

SWOSU players were tested last week for COVID-19 before voluntary workouts begin this month. All of this was precautionary to try and catch any positive tests before practice begins in August.

Edwin Detweiler, head athletic trainer at SWOSU, said last week staff has a policy in place in case any tests come back positive.

“If a player tests positive, it will be reported to university administration and then the individuals will be referred to team doctors and placed in self-isolation,” Detweiler said. “The players will not be allowed to return to team activities until they are cleared by our team physician.”

The plan SWOSU has in place also will allow for students to quarantine on campus or at home.

“If the student lives on campus, they will follow the SWOSU Housing department guidelines. If they live off campus, they will self-isolate off campus,” Detweiler said.
