The Weatherford Eagles cross country team placed third in its home meet Saturday in Rader Park

“I thought overall it was a good race,” coach Kaleb Fischer said. “We have almost a whole new team on varsity so it’s a learning experience for us.”

Weatherford finished third. Cache won the meet the OKC Knights finished in second. Senior Garry Rose was the highest Eagle finisher, earning sixth place with a time of 11:06.93.

“Garry is a good runner and he knows what it takes to compete in the top of each race,” Fischer said. “We have some things to fix which will make his racing a lot better but he is always good and he will figure out what to do to make himself better.”

Junior Grant Christian in 11th place with a time of 11:35.90. Freshman Jacoby Welsh finished 25th with a time of 12:09.55. Junior Alberto Arrieta 29th with a time of 12:14.83.Senior AJ Stevenson finished 32nd with a time of 12:16.18.

Other runners competing were senior Jorge Martinez, who finished 42nd, with a time of 12:38.16. Junior Luke Jett finished 54th with a total time of 13:08.18.

“Grant ran really well I thought,” Fischer said. “He was just outside the Top 10, coming in 11th. He has been working on different parts of his race during the summer and which improvement showed Saturday. I also thought Jacoby Welsh had a really good day. It is tough coming in as a freshman and having to compete on varsity but it doesn’t bother him at all. He is a tough competitor and always runs with that attitude. Alberto and AJ finished out our Top 5.”

Fischer said he was pleased with the team’s overall performance and there are things to learn and improve for the next race.

“I just want them to keep looking for ways to make themselves better,” Fischer said. “I was happy with the performance from this group considering how many of them are new to varsity racing.”

Weatherford’s next meet is Saturday a Watonga.

“I just want to see them work on improving the middle part of the race which is something we need to improve on,” Fischer said. “I think that is where we struggle most so we will be working on that in practice this week.”
