After losing 3-0 last Monday to Weatherford, The Corn Bible Academy Lady Crusaders volleyball team won on senior night by beating Elgin 3-1 Tuesday, but lost 3-0 to Cache Thursday on the road.

Corn Bible has five seniors on the roster — Kaysa Carpenter, Audra Fowble, Kinsi Grube, Molli Henderson and Kennedy Listak.

“After losing Monday (decisively) it definitely helped boost our confidence to get a win against Elgin,” coach Erin Basinger said. “Learning how to come back after a loss is a valuable lesson. I am glad we can start building on now to hopefully help us later into the postseason. but we need to keep the momentum and intensity going and we did not. However, we need to keep the momentum and intensity going after a win and we did not do that by losing to Cache like we did.”

CBA 3, Elgin 1

In the first set, Corn Bible built an early lead and a lot had to do with errors made by Elgin. They were ahead 12-2 and played spectacular defense. The only reason Elgin had 2 points is because Corn Bible hit spikes which went too long in the back court. Elgin didn’t score their fir earned point until Corn Bible wa ahead 17-3.

After that, Elgin went on a 4-0 run to get within 10 points. Corn Bible scored 3 points and Elgin scored 3 points. Corn Bible closed the set on a 6-1 run and won 25- 10. Carpenter served really well during the match which sparked Corn Bible to the win.

“We came out strong in the first set, with Kaysa serving well,” Basinger said. “I have her serving first because she is consistent and mentally focused.”

In the second set, Corn Bible built another early 5-2 lead with a kill from Brooklen Roberts. Elgin went on a 3-1 run to get within 1. This game went back and forth, but Elgin took its first lead of the game at 13-12. Elgin built a 6- point lead, but Corn Bible grinded it out and gave themselves a chance to win, but Elgin won 25- 22.

The third set was tight at first, but Corn Bible built a 13-8 lead. Corn Bible built a 19-11 lead, but Elgin would not go away. They came back, but Corn Bible won 25-20.

In the fourth set, Corn Bible had another great start as they built an 8-1 advantage with plays like Roberts getting a kill on the net. Corn Bible built a 13-3 lead, but Elgin came roaring back cutting it to 14-8, prompting Corn Bible to use a timeout. After the timeout, Elgin got within 4 points, 17-13. After that, Corn Bible closed the set on an 8-1 run and won the set, 25-14.

“In the second set, we seemed to relax our intensity and our errors allowed Elgin to gain momentum which we could not overcome,” Basinger said. “Moving forward we will be focusing on our consistency throughout matches, as well as our offensive game.”

Cache 3, CBA 0

Corn Bible struggled to stay with Cache as they lost the first set 25-11. The next two sets were no different as they lost the second set 25-12 and lost the final set 25-9.

“We had quite a bit of difficulty handling Cache’s serves, so we will be spending time working on our serve receive, as well as our offense,” Basinger said. “We spent most of the game on defense, which won’t beat a team like Cache. Hopefully this will be motivation to show up to each game mentally prepared and ready to play.”

Corn Bible falls to 8-6 on the season and their next game is 5:30 p.m. today on the road at Oklahoma Bible Academy. Oklahoma Bible was the state runner-up last season and Basinger said it will take great preparation if they expect to knock off Oklahoma Bible.

“We expect Oklahoma Bible to be equally as challenging as Cache was, so our goal is to work on converting our defense into offense,” Basinger said. “Oklahoma Bible is that caliber of a team which we will need to be able to compete with if we want to have any success in the postseason, so this will be good preparation for us.”
