Eagles claim tournament championship

Weatherford picked up four wins and a tournament championship this past weekend.

Those wins came against Travelers Navy 13-3, Perry 12-7, Elk City JV 11-1 and Elk City 8-7.

The four wins gave Weatherford the championship for its home tournament.

Weatherford 13, Travelers Navy 3 June 18

In the opening game of the tournament, Weatherford faced Travelers Navy and won the game 13-3.

After falling behind early, Weatherford took control of the game.

Travelers Navy scored in the top of the first on an RBI single to left field. That lead was short-lived.

Weatherford came right back in the bottom of the first. Dane McPherson reached base with 1 out on a dropped third strike. Gunnar Gaunt drew a walk, but McPherson was out during the at bat trying to steal second. Murphy Beck to put runners on the corners with 2 outs.

Gaunt scored during Zach Reherman’s at bat then Reherman singled to left field and Beck scored. Kade Kelsey drew a walk and Cameron Pruit reached base on an error to load the bases with 2 out. Callen Agan walked and that scored Reherman to put the Eagles up 3-1.

After holding Travelers Navy scoreless in the top of the second, Weatherford scored more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Sam Hoffman singled to left field to get things going. He scored two batters later as Gaunt hit a home run over the wall in left. Beck homered over the wall left field for back-to-back home runs for the Eagles. It was 6-1 Weatherford.

Reherman, Kelsey and Pruit each walked to load the bases. Three scored in the next at bat as Reherman scored on a wild pitch. Then Kelsey and Pruit both scored as Agan singled to left field. it was 9-1 Eagles. Weatherford added a run in the bottom of the third. McPherson, Gaunt and Beck hit back-to-back-to-back singles and on Beck’s single, McPherson scored to make it 10-1.

Travelers Navy got 2 runs in the top of the fourth on a 2-run home run over the wall in left field. That made it 10-3 Eagles. Weatherford ended the game in the bottom of the fourth by run rule. Agan led off the inning with a double to left field. Wyatt Chisum reached base on an error and runners were on the corners with no one out. Hoffman then walked to load the bases.

Agan scored during the next at bat on a wild pitch. Chisum and Hoffman both scored as Gaunt singled to left field.

Weatherford won the game 13-3.

Weatherford 12, Perry 7 June 19

An early deficit turned into a late-inning lead for Weatherford in the 12-7 win against Perry Friday.

Perry opened the game scoring 2 runs on an RBI single and an error to take the early 2-0 lead.

Weatherford responded with a run in the bottom of the first. Hoffman led off the game with a triple to center field. He scored two batters later as Gaunt hit a sacrifice fly. It was 2-1 Perry.

Weatherford tied the game in the bottom of the second. Agan hit a 1-out single to left field and Chisum followed that up with a single to right field. Agan scored on a sacrifice ground out to tie the game, 2-2.

That score would hold until the bottom of the fourth. Reherman led off that inning with a walk and Kelsey was hit by a pitch. Agan drew a walk as well and the bases were loaded with no one out. Reherman scored as Chisum hit a sacrifice ground out. Weatherford was up 3-2 at that point.

Perry took the lead back in the top of the fifth on a 2-RBI single. It was 4-3 Perry.

In the bottom of the fifth, Weatherford grabbed the lead again. Hoffman and McPherson hit back-to-back singles and Gaunt drew a walk to load the bases with no one out. Hoffman scored as Beck hit a sacrifice fly and the game was tied, 4-4.

McPherson stole home in the next at bat before Reherman hit a single to right field, scoring Gaunt. Reherman also scored in the inning and the Eagles were ahead 7-4 after five innings.

Perry tied the game, 7-7, in the top of the sixth on a steal of home, an error and RBI single.

Weatherford scored again in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away. Pruit and Hoffman hit back-to-back singles with 1 out. Pruit scored as McPherson doubled to center field. After Gaunt walked to load the bases, Beck was hit by a pitch, scoring Hoffman. It was 9-7 Eagles.

Both McPherson and Gaunt scored as Reherman hit a single to center field. Kelsey was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Agan walked and Beck scored to make it 12-7 Weatherford.

Weatherford 11, Elk JV 1 June 19

In the nightcap Friday, Weatherford took on Elk JV, winning 11-1.

Elk JV got an early lead, scoring a run in the top of the first on a sacrifice bunt.

Weatherford tied the game in the bottom of the first. McPherson reached base on an error with 1 out. He scored two batters later as Beck tripled to center field. It was 1-1 after the first inning.

In the bottom of the second, Weatherford got the offense going. Kelsey led off the inning with a walk. Agan singled. Two batters later, Agan scored as Pruit reached base on an error. It was 2-1 Eagles. They weren’t done.

R Villines singled to left field and Chisum scored. Two batters later, McPherson walked to load the bases with 2 outs. Pruit scored in the next at bat on a wild pitch before Villines and McPherson scored as Gaunt tripled to right field. it was 6-1 Weatherford.

Beck drove in Gaunt on a triple to right field. Beck then scored on a passed ball before Reherman walked. Reherman scored as Kelsey singled to center field. It was 9-1 Eagles.

Weatherford added a run in the bottom of the third. Chisum led off the inning with a single and Pruit drew a walk. Chisum scored two batters later when Grady Chaplin singled to right field. it was 10-1 Weatherford.

In the bottom of the fourth, Gaunt led things off reaching base on an error. He scored on a wild pitch to end the game by run rule, 11-1.

Weatherford 8, Elk City 7 June 20

In the tournament championship game, the Eagles faced familiar foe Elk City, using a last-inning comeback to win the game, 8-7.

Weatherford was in control early, but had to comeback in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.

Weatherford was up 2-0 after the first inning. Hoffman led off the game with a walk. Gaunt singled two batters later to put two on with 1 out. Hoffman scored after tagging up on a sacrifice fly by Beck. Gaunt scored as Reherman singled to left field.

Elk City cut the lead in half, scoring a run on an RBI single in the top of the third.

Weatherford responded in the bottom of the third. Chaplin reached base because of catcher’s interference. Two batters later, McPherson walked. Both scored two batters later as Beck hit a home run over the wall in center field with 2 outs. Weatherford was up at that point 5-1.

Elk City rallied for 6 runs in top of the fourth on a 2-RBI double, a basesloaded walk, a 2-RBI single and an error. Elk City was up 7-5.

No one scored again until the bottom of the seventh. Chaplin led off that inning getting hit by a pitch. Hoffman and McPherson hit back-to-back singled to load the bases with no one out. All three, Chaplin, Hoffman and McPherson scored when Gaunt hit a 3-RBI single to center field to win the game, 8-7.
