The Weatherford Lady Eagles volleyball team just keeps winning as they defeated the Corn Bible Academy Lady Crusaders Monday at home.

With this win, it gives Weatherford an 8 game win streak.

“We started off a little rusty,” Weatherford coach Sandi Barr said. “We played better as the game went along and it took us a while to get our wheels going, but once they got going, there was no stopping or slowing down.”

Corn Bible coach Erin Basinger said it was just one of those nights where nothing went their way.

“Our passes were not to the target, we made error after error, but the girls kept a positive attitude,” Basinger said. “Against a team like Weatherford, there is no room for error. We have to learn how to play to our team’s strengths when we have a game where we’re struggling with our control. Our serve receive has to improve before we can run any sort of offense, as well as our hitting control. In the locker room we talked about how to refocus when our opponents have scored several points in a row, so we will be working on our mental game as well.”

In the first set, Corn Bible built an early 5-0 lead. Weatherford came charging back, but Corn Bible kept scoring and was ahead 9-5. Weatherford went on a 7-2 run and took the lead at 12-11 for the first time in the game. Weatherford built a 19-16 lead and Corn Bible called a timeout. Weatherford closed the set on a 6-3 run and won 25-19 with a perfect final serve from Sydney Barr.

In the second set, Weatherford jumped out to an early 7-0 lead with plays like Kaydence Bryson getting a kill. Weatherford kept going and Lakin Green had a kill of her own, giving Weatherford a 13-0 advantage. Weatherford was ahead 17-0 before Corn Bible scored a point. Corn Bible did not go down without a fight as they scored 7 points in the set, but Weatherford won set 2 25-7. Aviree Roberson served all 17 points for the Lady Eagles.

“Aviree served up a storm,” Barr said. “We came out hot and just played really well and were firing on all cylinders.”

Set three went back and forth with Weatherford leading most of the way through. Weatherford was ahead 14- 11, but Corn Bible went on a 3-0 run to tie it at 14.

Weatherford responded by going on a 6-0 run of their own, making it 20-14. After that, Weatherford won the match 25-19 with a kill from Roberson to win the final set.

Barr said she told her girls to get rest and to be focused, because there are many distractions outside of volleyball.

“With schoolwork and the possibility of going online again because of COVID-19, it can be hard to stay focused doing schoolwork and playing volleyball,” Barr said. “Our goal is to go far this season and it is important to stay focused and not forget the goals we want to accomplish and meet.”

Basinger said one thing they did well during the set was maintain a positive attitude.

“One thing we did commend the team on was their positive attitude and their tenacity,” Basinger said. “They did not give up or shut down, especially in the second set when we were behind by so much. If we can combine that with better play, I think we will be much harder to beat.”
