The Thomas-Fay-Custer Lady Terriers basketball team begins a new chapter and new beginning in their basketball program as Jim Petree is the new coach of the Lady Terriers.

“I am extremely excited for this opportunity,” Petree said. “I got out of coaching the past three seasons and was the boys coach for a long time at Thomas.”

The girls began practice October 1 and have had a scrimmage.

“We have been working hard and hoping to get a season complete,” Petree said. “We get along really well and I am excited for the season to begin.

Petree was the boys basketball coach at Thomas until 2017. He became the manager for three years at Prairie West Golf Club, but when the coaching job for the Thomas girls came open, he took the job.

“I was the former boys coach a few years back for so long and I was familiar with Thomas,” Petree said. “This gives me a chance to slow down and return to what I love. My wife is a teacher and I am just coaching basketball for the girls.”

Petree said the girls return talent from last season and there are lots of girls who can help the team be successful this season.

“Katelyn Jones and averaged 11 points last season,” Petree said. “Shaylee Maddux is an outstanding defender. Kyla Megli was a starter last season and was averaging around 11 points per game. Sydney Hampton averaged around seven points last season. We also had a handful of girls who played a lot last season. Also, a sophomore named Berekely Wright moved in from Weatherford who will help us a lot.”

The first scheduled game is, 6:30 p.m. December 1 at Seiling, but may get postponed depending on how far Thomas football advances in the playoffs.
