The SWOSU soccer team opened its 2021 spring season in style Thursday, holding East Central scoreless and posting a 1-0 victory at the SWOSU Athletic Complex.

Each team had 5 shot attempts in the first half and played a balanced first 45 minutes, with East Central getting the advantage with two shots on goal, both of which were stopped by SWOSU goalkeeper Ashley Hughes. Those would be the only on-goal attempts for the Tigers in the match, while the Bulldogs got going with 11 shot attempts in the second half.

The lone scoring play of the game took place early in the second half, with Brianna Benitez finding Claire Torry for the first goal of the season and the deciding goal of the match. Benitez led SWOSU with 5 shot attempts and one on goal in the match while Brenna McGuirk fired off four shot attempts and the duo helped SWOSU to a 16-6 shot advantage.

Thursday’s match was a non conference contest for each team and now the Bulldogs take a 1-0 record into their Great American Conference opener Sunday against Northwestern Oklahoma State. That match will begin at 2 p.m. from the SWOSU Athletic Complex.
