The Thomas-Fay-Custer Terriers took on the Cordell Blue Devils in the second round of Class A football playoffs.

The Blue Devils had a lot of uncertainty if they would get to play due to COVID-19. Cordell decided not to forfeit and play with only 13 players and two coaches. The Terriers took advantage of their limited amount of players and won the game 49-22.

The Blue Devils received the ball first but the Terriers didn’t waste any time, forcing the Blue Devils to turn it over on downs where the Terriers took over on the 50-yardline. On the first play Ethan Hamberlin ran the ball 50 yards into the end zone, making the score 7-0.

In Cordell’s next possession, the Terriers forced another turn over on downs where the Terriers took over on their 49. A touchdown pass from Jaxon Ward to Noah Rainwater put the Terriers on top 14-0 with 7:22 remaining in the first quarter.

The Terriers defense once again would force a turn over on downs putting them on their 19-yard-line. On the first play, it was a hand off to Caleb Rainwater, which resulted in an 80-yard touchdown run giving the Terriers a 21-0 lead.

The Terriers defense continued to be clutch as they forced a fumble for the Blue Devils giving them the ball back on Cordells 41. A reverse pass from Jaxen Mannering to Jaxon Ward put another 6 points on the board, the score was 28-0 going into the second quarter.

The Terriers defense struggled more in the second quarter, Terrier penalties gave the Blue Devils good field position to put them on the goal line. The Blue Devils ran the ball in 7 yards to score their first touchdown, cutting the lead 28-7 with 4:10 remaining in the half.

The Terriers offense couldn’t answer which resulted in their offense punting the ball away to their own 38. On the first play Cordell three a 38-yard touchdown pass as they continued to cut down the lead to 28-14 with 1:36 remaining. The Terriers answered with another touchdown before the half making it 35-14.

In the second half the Blue Devils couldn’t stop the Terriers as they went on to score two more touchdowns and take the game 49-22.

“Anytime you can survive and advance this time of year that’s good and that’s what I told the guys,” coach Bob Ward said.

“It gave us a by week which was beneficial for us,” Ward said when asked about the new playoff rules. “Were just like everybody else we gotta take it one week at a time and one day at a time.”

The Terriers are back at home again this week for the third round of playoffs where they will host Tonkawa 7 p.m., Friday.
