LAWTON — The Weatherford Eagles boys cross country team finished third place at the Cameron Invitational in Lawton.

“I expected us to be third considering the other teams who were there,” coach Kaleb Fischer said. “We ran better than last week, but I still want to see stronger races from these guys. They are capable of running better than what they have shown so far. We are planning on upping our mileage this week and seeing where that will take us.

Weatherford finished in third place, scoring 143 points. Coming in second place was Elgin scoring 83 points and Cache won the race scoring 61 points.

Garry Rose had a Top 10 finish for Weatherford coming in eighth with a time of 17:10.00. Jacoby Welsh finished 20th with a time of 17:39.00. Grant Christian finished 28th with a time of 18:02.54. Alberto Arietta finished 41st with a time of 18:22.09. A.J. Stevenson finished 53rd with a time of 18:48.00. Jorge Martinez finished 85th with a total time of 19:56.00.

Welsh was back this week after missing the last race and Fischer said he had a really good race.

“We just did not seem very focused,” Fischer said. “Jacoby had the best race of anyone. He started off in the back and worked hard the whole race to get up into a good position.”

Weatherford’s next meet is 10 a.m. Saturday at Rader Park.

“Hopefully we are getting these bad races out of the way early,” Fischer said.
