Summer is close and summer sports activities are even closer.

The City of Weatherford will have a little league season.

Both 12U Midgets and 10U Pee Wee will begin seasons Monday. Coach Pitch begins Tuesday and T-ball begins June 9. The seasons continue through June.

As for Weatherford High School, Athletic Director Reagan Roof said the school is looking at how they will have summertime activities.

The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) Board of Directors voted Friday to “conduct summertime activities in accordance with current rules and policies as stated in the administrator’s handbook.

This vote gave school districts the ability to begin activities this coming week.

“It is still being discussed but we are hoping to start our normal summer schedules but we will be adding precautionary guidelines for each sport,” Roof said. “We will be adding some practical but hopefully effective guidelines that will include things like a sanitizing schedule for all equipment and facilities. We will be limiting the number of athletes in an enclosed area and on our busses. We will be requiring athletes to wash and sanitize their hands frequently throughout the workouts.”

Because of this, summer teams may not play the same teams they have in past seasons.

“We will not be competing with as many outside school districts as we normally would. We will be playing less summer baseball, basketball and football than the past summers. We also will be a lot more cautious of what teams we schedule,” Roof said.

The OSSAA has set guidelines for schools participating in summer activities.

Conferences have different viewpoints regarding reopening facilities.

Last week, the Big 12 Conference announced its schools would be able to.

Oklahoma State announced Thursday it has formed a task force, but did not give a date for athletes or staff to return.

A task force consisting of medical experts plus leaders from campus and the athletic department has been working to ensure a safe return for all Oklahoma State student-athletes, starting with football.

The leader of the task force is Dr. Kayse Shrum, OSU Center for Health Sciences president since 2013. Shrum has been integral in developing testing capabilities statewide during the pandemic. Other medical professionals from the OSU Center for Health Sciences included in the task force are Dr. Johnny Stephens and Dr. Dennis Blankenship.

Dr. Val Gene Iven has served as the OSU athletic department’s head team physician and director of sports medicine since 2007 and is joined on the task force by OSU sports medicine professionals John Stemm and Scott Parker.

Oklahoma did announce this week athletes may return for voluntary football workouts beginning July 1.
