The Weatherford City Commission Tuesday approved a recommendation by the Hotel/Motel Tax Committee to give $8,000 to the Weatherford Area Chamber of Commerce for the creation of a new Weatherford website.

However, the chamber’s initial request for $16,000 was cut to $8,000 by the Hotel/Motel Tax Committee with the understanding the chamber of commerce would seek the other half of the funding from the City of Weatherford. Mayor Mike Brown said the money was not in the city’s budget at this time, but there are some funds which can be used for community projects.

After some discussion, the commission approved the hot/mot request with the stipulation the chamber would return to the hot/mot committee and request the remaining funds. If the chamber’s request for more funding gets denied, the city will consider providing the remaining funds.

The new website would allow visitors to access the City of Weatherford page, the Chamber of Commerce page, the SWOSU website and the Weatherford Public Schools website. Additionally, the company managing the website would be able to update the calendar with upcoming events more frequently.

In other business, the commission approved two more hot/mot funds requests. The first is for $28,612 for the Heartland of America Museum to create promotional materials. This is a yearly request.

The commission also approved a $15,000 hot/mot tax request for the Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s rodeo in April. This is an annual event which brings in a lot of people, and revenue, to Weatherford.
