Weatherford Public Schools and OPAA! is celebrating National Lunch Week with special guests and backpack giveaways.

This year’s theme is “Wild About School Lunch.”

Sharbee Heinrichs, director of nutrition at WPS, said the week is meant to emphasize to the public how important the school lunch program is.

Heinrichs said OPAA! serves about 2,000 lunches a day to hungry students as well as breakfast to early birds. Additionally, Burcham Elementary has introduced all-day pre-k, which had added about 100 lunches each day.

Principals, administration and local officials got involved in the fun.

Monday, East Principal Brad Howl and West Principal Meagan Merkie served lunch to their students.

Wednesday, Mayor Mike Brown and Superintendent Jill Henderson served lunch to hungry Burcham students. Henderson also passed out cookies.

OPAA! also hosted a giveaway. Two students at each school site received a backpack filled with school supplies.
