  • Historic U.S. 66 opened in 1926 and connected Santa Monica, California, and Chicago. The highway runs through Weatherford and Oklahoma has the most miles of any state.
Quickly after Route 66 was officially decommissioned June 27, 1985, federal agencies, state agencies, local and private organizations, as well as members of the public began advocating to commemorate and preserve the highway.
