Morrison: The Influence of a Life

I write this on the day set aside to honor the memory and contribution of Jackie Robinson.

In 1947, he broke the color barrier by becoming the first black player in this century to play on a Major League baseball team. He overcame vehement prejudice of the times, endured death threats and physical abuse without retaliation.

After he had proven his ability to play the game and not respond to the abuse, he became active in civil rights causes. While everyone was his friend when he did not strike back many were not so happy with him when he was free to express his feelings about the prejudice of the day.

He was a Christian. One of the quotes most attributed to him was: “A life is not important except in the impact it has on others.” While this is not a Biblical quote, it certainly is in line with the teachings of Christ.

It bears some similarity to the Apostle Paul’s life verse in Acts 20:24. “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me — the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace.”

It is important to remember we are a link in the chain of human history. It is up to us to choose to be a weak link or a strong length. Most mornings, Mary and I pray for our children and their spouses, grandchildren and now one precious great-grandchild. That makes 17 souls that we are in some respect responsible for.

My dad was far from perfect, but I am grateful I didn’t have to unlearn some vocabulary when I became a Christian. I never heard dad use God’s name or use other obscenities in the home. I saw his leadership in the little country Sunday School when he would sometimes be the only man present.

He was leading the music in a country church revival the night I gave my heart to Christ. I learned how to work and do hard things from his example. When they needed men to help dig a grave in preparation for a funeral, he was there. That was before the days of backhoes. My only regret is I never remember expressing my gratitude for those lessons of life.

So many children, these days, are growing up in fatherless homes. Society is reaping the harvest of this problem. There is a great need for foster homes. It seems too great a sacrifice for many but such a service rendered could change the direction of many youth.

Are you praying for the youth of your circle of influence? It is always easy to criticize and forget the mistakes of our youth. Many of these will surprise you and grow up to make great contributions. You may play a vital part in their lives by using your influence and prayers to guide their destiny.

May God use you as an instrument of righteousness, an agent of reconciliation, and an ambassador of the King of Kings.
