With July 4 being a week away, Weatherford Police Chief Louis Flowers said he wants to ensure everyone has a safe and fun Independence Day.

“We just want to make sure everyone has a safe and fun time celebrating our nation’s birthday,” Flowers said. “Safety is our No. 1 goal and we hope everyone has a safe and fun Fourth of July.”

According to Weatherford’s City ordinance, it is unlawful to manufacture, sell, possess, display, use or discharge any fireworks within the city provided supervised public displays of fireworks is hereby authorized subject to the provisions of the fire prevention code.

“What this means is one cannot manufacture, sell, possess or display or use or discharge any fireworks within Weatherford City limits, and the fine for doing so is $130” Flowers said. “The City of Weatherford teams up with the Weatherford Rotary Club to do the fireworks for the city of Weatherford and puts on a fireworks show, outside of city limits.”

Flowers said his goal is for everyone to have a safe Fourth of July and for everyone to be responsible as well.

“I just want to remind everyone we know people buy fireworks this time of year,” Flowers said. “One is not allowed to discharge them inside city limits and one could get the $130 fine, but no arrests will be made. On the flip side, we want everyone to be safe. Poppers are legal, but sparklers are not allowed in city limits since they are considered a firework. When people are around people, please be safe when using poppers.”

Flowers said one has to have permission from the land owner to shoot fireworks on their land outside city limits.

“Like I said before, please be safe and smart and please make sure kids are supervised. We want everyone to be safe this Fourth of July,” Flowers said.
