Practicing generosity this Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is less than a week away, and Allen and Red Buller are busy preparing for a feast, but it’s not for their own family.

The Bullers are hosting a free Thanksgiving dinner for the community, and they are inviting everyone to attend.

“We’re planning for a high amount of people, so we’ll have plenty of food,” Allen said. “Even if people decide that morning to come, they’re welcome.”

An event this size requires lots of work from many helping hands. While the couple is making all the preparations themselves, they are asking for assistance from any community members who are looking to serve others this holiday.

Food donations or serving and cleaning on the day of the event would be welcome help. Even if a community member just wanted to lend a helping hand for 30 minutes between family gatherings, the effort would be appreciated.

“I’m hoping we have more (volunteers) show up that way no one feels obligated to stay longer or feel they have to help the whole time,” Red said.

The feast will take place from 2-6 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 24, at the Pioneer Center at 1000 Gartrell Place in Weatherford. To-go meals also will be available for those who are unable to stay and enjoy the meal.

The couple decided to host the event after seeing the way some people struggle during the holiday season.

“I know how it is without your loved ones for the holidays. It’s devastating. It’s like you go into an instant depression. If everyone can show up and have a good time, then it will be a success in our eyes,” Allen said.

Allen and Red both said if the event goes well, they want to continue hosting the dinner for years to come for the community. For the day to go smoothly, though, they are asking for compassionate community members to lend a hand and help them as they serve others this Thanksgiving.
