The Weatherford Lady Eagles cross country team had a perfect start as a team as they placed first at the Sand Plum Invitational hosted by Weatherford High School.

“I think this is a great way to start off the year,” coach Kaleb Fischer said. “These girls have been working hard and I am proud of them for having a good first race.”

Coming in second place was Merritt. Senior Kennadi Price won the race with a time of 6:00.42 and 10 seconds behind her coming in second was sophomore Jordan Hoffman with a time of 6:10.41.

“Kennadi and Jordan both really ran well,” Fischer said “I thought they both looked strong and each of them had a good finish so I was happy with that. I am excited to se what they will do this year.”

Junior Ana Arrieta finished 14th with a time of 6:44.95. Sophomore Morgan Mouse finished 24th with a time of 6:55.53. Junior Peyton Foster finished 39th with a time of 7:21.44.

Other runners finished as well, including freshman Ava Foster who finished 42nd with a time of 7:25.05 and sophomore Brooklyn Floyd who finished 45th with a time of 7:28.76.

“We have been working to bring our times down,” Fischer said. “Ana really improved her time from last year and is looking good. Morgan will continue to improve as the season progresses. Peyton, Ava and Brooklyn all ran well and all three of them are looking for ways to drop their times.”

Fischer said his team has momentum from this race and he wants to carry that momentum into the next race.

“Our goal is to just have fun and enjoy every race,” Fischer said. “When we do that we run really well.”

Weatherford’s next meet is Saturday at Watonga.

“I just want to see them work on improving the middle part of the race,” Fischer said. “I think that is where we struggle most so we will be working on that in practice this week.”
