CORDELL— A 32-year-old Canute woman faces charges in Washita County District Court related to interaction between she and 13-year-old girl.
Jamaia Dawn Cress faces one count of lewd or indecent acts to child under 16, one count of furnishing alcoholic beverage to a person under 21, and one count of obstructing officer.
The incident in question is alleged to have happened at a residence in Cordell in May.
Cordell police responded to the residence May 21 after the Washita County Sherriff’s Office dispatcher received a 911 call saying a woman threatened the woman calling, a probable cause affidavit filed in the Washita County District Court reads.
Once authorities arrived on scene, it was discovered the person calling was Cress. The woman who allegedly threatened her was outside in an SUV.
The woman, outside, told law enforcement she was trying to make contact with her 13-year-old daughter.
The victim’s mother found her daughter in one of the bedrooms, laying on the bed. The mother said she tried to speak to her daughter, who only responded with the words “I’m 2006,” and she began to speak, but her word was being said backward, court records indicate.
The victim’s mother told police she could smell alcohol on her daughter’s breath. She said she asked the woman in the room, later identified as Cress, “if she really gave a 13-year-old alcohol,” court records indicate.
Cress did not answer the question and the victim’s mother told police she could tell Cress was intoxicated, court records indicate. The mother then took her daughter out of the room and house and took her to her vehicle outside, court records indicate.
As officers questioned Cress, they could “smell a profound odor of alcohol coming from her person,” court records indicate.
Cress told officers the victim’s mother entered the residence and began to threaten Cress. Cress was asked if she had given minors to alcohol.
Cress was asked if she had given minors to alcohol. Cress told police the she didn’t live at the residence and “she couldn’t control what the kids did.”
Cress was questioned about giving the kids alcohol and she responded by saying, “I’m the one who call y’all here, why are you questioning me?” Cress allegedly refused at first to give officers her name or date of birth.
While trying to place handcuffs on Cress, Cress allegedly began yelling and tried to get away, even yelling at the children to turn the cameras on in the residence, court records indicate.
After several minutes, officers were able to get handcuffs on Cress. “Cress continued to say she was the one who had called us. Cress wanted to know why she was going to jail. I asked again what her name and date of birth were. Cress finally divulged her information.”
Officers then spoke with the 13-year-old alleged victim, who was able to speak with officers. When asked if she had been allowed to drink alcohol or given alcohol, she said “Yes.” Officers then asked what she was allowed to drink. She said she had been given a drink of a wine cooler and a drink of 90- proof peppermint schnapps, court records indicate. The mother had found her daughter laying naked
The mother had found her daughter laying naked on the bed and when the victim was asked why, she said she could not find her clothes, court records indicate.
The victim and Cress allegedly had an encounter. Police spoke with the victim and another witness, who alleged the encounter took place, court records indicate.
The alleged victim then taken was to the hospital, where tests could check for any sign of injuries, court records show.
Charges were officially filed July 21. If convicted, Cress could face 3-20 years in prison
If convicted, Cress could face 3-20 years in prison for the lewd or indecent acts charge, up to 1 year in the county jail for the alcohol charge, and up to 1 year in the county jail and up to a $500 fine, or both, for the obstruction charge.
