CORN — The Corn Bible Academy Crusaders defeated Beaver 38-32, Monday night on their home field.

“The first win always feels good to get under your belt,” coach Asa Zoschke said. “We’ve been looking forward to this for a while and I know the boys are really excited about this win. It’s a much more fun game whenever you win.”

CBA started off on a bad foot and Beaver blocked a punt which resulted in a touchdown for the Dusters giving them a 6-0 lead with 6:30 remaining in the first quarter. The Crusaders throw a pick to Beaver to end the first quarter. The score remained 6-0.

Beaver started with the ball and drove all the way to the goal line until the Crusaders stop the Dusters and forced them to turn it over on downs. A 55-yard run from quarterback Brendan Miller got CBA going and also led to a 40-yard touchdown pass to put the Crusaders on the 5-yard-line. Miller ran the ball into the end zone along with the two-point conversion to give CBA an 8-6 advantage.

The Crusaders defense stopped Beaver forcing them to turn the ball over. The Dusters picked the ball off for a pick six to take the lead 12-8. The Crusaders quickly answered with a drive down the field that ended in a 30-yard touchdown pass giving them the lead once again, 16-12. With 2 minutes remaining in the first half, Beaver scored a touchdown putting them ahead 20- 16 at halftime.

The Crusaders immediately came out swinging in the second half. CBA received the ball on the 40-yard-line and ran it 40 yards on the first play to score a touchdown; the score was now 24-20. Beaver answered with a touchdown on the kickoff, the score 26-24.

The score remained the same until the final 3 minutes when CBA scored a touchdown. They went on to recover the onside kick and score another touchdown giving them a 38-26 lead with 2:51 left. Beaver went on to score one touchdown in the last 30 seconds of the game, but it wasn’t enough to defeat the Crusaders. CBA picked up the 38-32 victory.

“It helps to come off a win for the game that we have to play Friday,” Zoschke said. “We played Thursday and now Monday and then again Friday so I’m just proud of my guys for sticking it out and playing well.”

CBA plays again 7 p.m. this Friday at home against Waynoka.
