The town of Thomas will soon be aglow with Friday night lights as the Terriers begin their football season in just two days. The Thomas-Faye-Custer Terriers ended last year’s season with a record of 2-8, so they are looking forward to growing and making improvements this season.

The Terriers hosted a three-team scrimmage Friday night to prepare for the games ahead.

Cordell and Crescent traveled to Thomas, and the teams took turns playing each other and practicing the skills they had been learning in the off-season.

Afterwards, Thomas-Faye-Custer football coach Bob Ward shared his thoughts about his team and their goals for the fall.

How do you feel about the upcoming season?

“I feel really excited about it. Our kids have worked really hard and gotten through some hard times. Attitude is great; effort is great and we’re looking forward to it.”

Where have you seen improvement in the offseason in preparation for this season?

“Attitude, effort.

Continuity within the team. I think our bonding together has been a lot better than what it was last year.

Football is a team sport and if you can’t play together, you’re going to be in trouble. Little things off the field I’ve seen in their attitude and effort. Their effort has been tremendous.

We just need to work on our technique a little bit.”

Obviously, winning games is the main goal of the season. But what are other goals you have and what do you hope your team will excel in other than just winning the games?

“Understanding the team aspect of it and working together and understanding we’re still not at the ultimate goal of where we need to be. We just need to bond together a little bit, work on the field to get our technique better a little bit and get better each week.”

The Terriers will once again meet on their home field this Friday evening to take on Watonga for their first game of the season. The game will start at 7 p.m.
