THOMAS — The Thomas-Fay-Custer Terriers defeated the Sayre Eagles on Thursday night 28-6, on their home field.

This improves the Terriers record to 4-0 in district play and 5-1 overall.

“We had some seniors really step up in the locker room and lead a little bit,” coach Bob Ward said. “We knew we were flat last week and they did a good job of rallying the troops. We also knew we had to come out aggressive from the start.”

The Terriers did just that, scoring on a quick drive capped off with a 5-yard touchdown run from Ethan Hamberlin. Thomas was ahead 7-0 with about 7 minutes remaining in the first quarter. A pick on defense from Jacobe Edwards led to another 5-yard touchdown run from Owen Baldwin, giving the Terriers a 14-0 advantage against the Eagles going into the second quarter.

The second quarter opened with a 50-yard touchdown run from Jeremiah Fernandez to give the Terriers a 21-0 with about 11 minutes remaining in the quarter. The Eagles and Terriers both turned it over on downs twice before the first half came to an end.

Another pick from Owen Baldwin late in the third quarter lead to a 88-yard drive down the field which ended in a 15-yard touchdown run from Baldwin, giving the Terriers a 28-0 lead against Sayre. The Terriers and the Eagles went back and forth for the remainder of the half until Sayre score their first touchdown late in the fourth quarter to put them on the board 28-6. Thomas ran away with the lead and eventually to a win.

“The goal is to always shut out on defense but unfortunately we let that get away at the very end but that’s alright,” Ward said. “I’m proud of the way our guys hit their gaps, knew their responsibility. We got to continue to get better each week and fine tune the little things that will propel you through the playoffs. The main thing is really focusing on the little things and not so much the small things.”

Thomas is back on the road and will travel to Merritt this Friday. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
