Weatherford falls to OBA 3-1

The Weatherford Lady Eagles volleyball team suffered defeat to Oklahoma Bible Academy Monday.

“I think we were slow to the game and struggled to get going early,” coach Sandi Barr said. “One thing we did really well was we never gave up. No matter how much we trailed, we kept fighting and fighting, especially in the third and fourth set.”

In the first set, Oklahoma Bible made errors early and the Lady Eagles were ahead 5-2. Lakin Green had a kill which got the crowd going.

Oklahoma Bible went on a 6-0 run and coach Barr called a timeout. Weatherford finally ended the streak with a kill by Kaydence Bryson. Weatherford got back in the set with plays like Sydney Barr having a block. Weatherford was down 13-11, but Oklahoma Bible went on a 4-0 run making the score 17- 11. Weatherford trailed 21-11, but went on a 7-0 run making the score 21-18. Oklahoma Bible closed the set on a 4-1 run and won the first set 25-19.

The second set was close and Weatherford took the lead at 11-10 as Ireland Helton had back-to-back aces. Weatherford built a lead and kept it with plays like Sydney Barr getting a kill. Oklahoma Bible went on a 4-0 run late to claim the lead back at 23-22 and coach Barr called a timeout. Weatherford was down 24-22, but Sydney Barr had a block, making the score 24-23. Oklahoma Bible got the next point with a kill and won the second set 25-23.

Weatherford struggled early in the third set and trailed 11-7. They got back in the game with an ace from Sydney Barr, making it 11-9. Weatherford trailed 15-12, but took the lead back with a kill by Bryson.

On the next play, Helton had an ace making it 17-15 and Oklahoma Bible called a timeout. Weatherford kept their streak going and were ahead 19-15. Sydney Barr has a kill giving Weatherford a 21-17 lead. Weatherford was ahead 24-18 and Oklahoma Bible went on a 3-0 run and coach Barr called a timeout. Weatherford won the set 25-21 as Oklahoma Bible hit the ball out of bounds on the next play. “Ireland got hot hitting

outside,” Barr said. “We tried her in both positions. I should have used her outside more and we picked it up once I made this adjustment. We battled every point and we had a positive attitude and great energy during the third set. We have to do this in every set if we want to win against good teams.”

In the fourth set, Weatherford trailed early. Weatherford refused to go down without a fight. They got back in the game and were trailing 16- 14. Weatherford kept grinding and trailed 20-18. Weatherford trailed 21-20 with a kill by Helton, then tied the set with a block by Green, making it 21-21. Oklahoma Bible closed the set on a 4-0 run and won the set 25-21. They won the match 3-1.

“I want to see a win,” Barr said. “Yes, Southwest Covenant is a good team and it will be tough, but they are beatable. This game is an open door, kind of like tonight was and we did not take advantage. I am hoping we can play better and leave Southwest Covenant with a win.”

Weatherford falls to 14-3 on the season and returns to action, 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Southwest Covenant.
