ELGIN — Weatherford girls basketball took the trip to Elgin and won by 49 points Tuesday, beating Elgin 70-21.

Weatherford has played Elgin once this season, and beat them 85-35 in the Weatherford Classic.

“We always try to play at a certain level, regardless of who we are playing,” coach Grant Givens said. “Depending on who we play against, the score can get lopsided early. Hopefully, this continues to travel for us and helps us to continue to get better.”

Weatherford was better in every aspect of the game and did not allow a single point in the first quarter. They scored 25 points in the first quarter and were ahead 25-0 going into the second quarter.

“I thought we played well on defense and offense,” Givens said. “We did a great job pressuring the ball, which led to easy baskets.”

Givens kept applying pressure to Elgin, and the team only scored three points in the second quarter. Weatherford also scored 21 points in the second quarter, which gave them a 46-3 lead going into halftime. Hunter Bayless scored 14 points and Addy Hoffman scored 11 points.

“Our defense generated lots of easy offense,” Givens said. “We moved the ball around very well and got lots of open looks from the free throw line. That generated great offense for us.”

In the third quarter, lots of girls off the bench got some minutes, and Weatherford was ahead 58-13 going into the fourth quarter. Givens said minutes like this are important and will help the reserves get better and gain more confidence.

In the fourth quarter, all left to happen was let the clock hit zero. Weatherford won the game 70-21.

“Our second group went in and did not give up many points,” Givens said. ‘This created some groups and easy baskets. They played very well.”

Addy Hoffman scored 17 points and Bayless scored 14 points.

Weatherford improves to 14-2 and played Friday at home against Chickasha. Weatherford plays its next game, 1 p.m. today against Elk City at home.

“We will have the same mindset we did tonight,” Givens said. “We will just play our game on both sides of the ball. If we rotate, force turnovers and score, we should be just fine. We need to take advantage of these final few games and really prepare for the playoffs.”
