ELK CITY — Weatherford tennis competed in its first tournament of the season at the Elk City Invitational.

Morgan Mouse won the consolation award for singles.

Weatherford’s Kyser Smith and Mouse participated in singles. Kaylee Hall and Cydnee Henderson completed in doubles.

Mouse finished fifth in the consolation in girls singles and received a medal. Smith tied for seventh place in boys singles. Hall and Henderson finished in sixth place in girls doubles.

“I was pleased with how we played in our first tournament, because Elk City is a very tough tournament,” coach Sandi Barr said. “For Kaylee and Cydnee, this was their first tournament. Kyser and Morgan had never played singles before. Nerves were high as this was our first tournament of the season, but they played well.”

Barr said Weatherford tennis is off to a much better start than they were last season and want to keep the momentum going.

“We have started out stronger than we did last year,” Barr said. “We also got our first medal, with Morgan winning the consolation. We have already won as many matches as we did the entire season last year.”

Barr said Weatherford started the season well, but there are a few things they can improve on.

“For my doubles players, we need to work on getting serves above the net consistently. For both singles, it is just staying prepared for anything and placing the ball better at times,” Barr said. “With that being said, I am pleased with the growth we have experienced since last year and carrying basically a full team helps push players to be better.”

Weatherford will compete Monday in the Conference tournament in Oklahoma City, at Earlywine Park.

“The players who played Tuesday hopefully will have less nerves from experiencing their first tournament,” Barr said. “We still have a young team as far as experience so nerves are usually high. I try to encourage them to have fun and not worry about the outcome so they will relax but it is so hard to do.”
